Dogmatism and Nazi Resistance

with 2 comments

I’ve been reading a book about mainline Calvinists and the state churches of Lutheranism and their resistance to the Nazis in Germany and the Netherlands. Namely, they argue that their firm theology was what really spurred them to action—by having surety of what it means to live the life of a Christian and an idea of the rewards awaiting them in Heaven, they were able to quickly see through the lies and propaganda of the rising National Socialism and act accordingly. This was especially true for the Dutch Calvinists who were able to borrow from the long tradition of Calvinism and its relation to the government in the Netherlands.

Of course, I’m joking. No such book exists. The Confessing Church was primarily comprised of what is now known in many quarters as a compromising liberal. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Karl Barth…pray for us.
